Accepting payments with Blink PayNow

What is Blink PayNow?

down arrow

Blink PayNow is a one-off payment service that allows merchants to easily accept direct credit payments directly from your customers’ bank accounts. Blink PayNow is an API based service that connects directly to participating banks and can be added to your website or app as an immediate payment option.

How does Blink PayNow work?

down arrow

Blink PayNow uses modern APIs that can be easily incorporated into your website or app as a payment method. Our APIs enable your business to initiate a payment request directly to a customer's bank account for approval. Once a payment is approved, transactions can be recognised immediately.

What are APIs?

down arrow

An API (Application Programming Interface) is a piece of software that allows two systems to talk to each other. To use a simple analogy, an API is like a waiter in a restaurant, and the table you are sitting at is one system, and the kitchen is a second system. The waiter takes your order, then delivers your order to the chef, and returns it to your table when ready. This is the essence of what an API does. It takes a request, goes off to fetch it, and then returns it.

Is it easy to set up Blink PayNow?

down arrow

Getting started is simple - just sign up on the BlinkPay website and our team will connect with you to complete the set-up of your account in our system. To complete set-up, we will need the following as a minimum:
- Trading name
- NZBN (New Zealand Business Number)
- Bank account number (for receiving payments)
As part of your onboarding, we will assign a tech lead to help you connect to our service.

NB: If you are also a Xero customer, you can add our payment services from the Xero App Store (NZ). Find and select our Blink PayNow app, click ‘get this app’ and follow the steps.

Will I have to fill-in lots of paperwork to get set-up?

down arrow

No. Our set-up process is all digital. All you have to do is fill-in our sign up form on our website which can be done in a matter of minutes. To complete the sign-up process, we will send you a contract that can be signed digitally.

How long does it take to set up Blink PayNow?

down arrow

Once your business has been registered in our system, Blink PayNow can be set-up reasonably quickly depending on your technical requirements. Our technical lead will be able to provide guidance once you have signed up.

NB: If you are a Xero customer, it can be set-up and added to your invoices in a few clicks as we have directly integrated with the Xero platform.

I run an e-commerce site with custom code, can I connect?

down arrow

Absolutely! If you're running an e-commerce site with custom code, you can definitely connect.  To get your API access credentials, sign up through our sign up form and select the request API access checkbox.

Additionally, we recommend taking advantage of our Software Development Kits (SDKs) that we have available on GitHub for a number of backend languages.

I’m not technical, will you help me set-up your payment services?

down arrow

Of course! We acknowledge that not every business has its own technical people, and so we are more than willing to provide guidance if required.

Recurring payments with Blink AutoPay (coming soon)

What is Blink AutoPay?

down arrow

Blink AutoPay (coming soon) is a new modern payment method that allows merchants to debit payments directly from your customers’ bank accounts on a recurring basis. Blink AutoPay is an API based service that connects directly to participating banks resulting in a streamlined sign up process and instant payment processing.

How does Blink AutoPay work?

down arrow

Blink AutoPay uses modern APIs that can be easily incorporated into your website or app as a payment method. Our APIs enable your business to initiate a recurring payment request directly to a customer's bank account for approval. Once a request is approved, transactions can be initiated with each billing cycle on a recurring basis without any additional approvals.

Is Blink AutoPay a Direct Debit arrangement?

down arrow

Blink AutoPay is NOT a Direct Debit arrangement. Blink AutoPay operates under the New Zealand Open Banking Standards. The standards provide for functionality that enables recurring payments from a customer's account as long as they consent to the request. The Direct Debit rules do not apply to Blink AutoPay meaning a much simpler set up and faster processing times.

What is Open banking?

down arrow

Open banking is the name of an initiative that seeks to establish greater competition in the financial services industry by allowing more companies to access financial data and banking platforms to deliver innovative new financial products and services for merchants and consumers.   The key idea is that you give permission to trusted third-party companies (whose services you are using) to access your banking data on your behalf.  This allows such companies to offer better products and services that may be customised to your needs, as well as speed up (or shorten) application processes for lending products, insurances, and the like.

What are the benefits of Blink AutoPay?

down arrow

Blink AutoPay enables merchants to start collecting new recurring payments sooner, as these are not subject to the 10-day notice period that a new direct debit must observe. Customers benefit from a quicker and simpler sign-up process, and because it isn’t tied to a card, they do not have to worry about missed payments if a card gets lost or expires.

How is a recurring payment different to a direct debit?

down arrow

The primary difference between a direct debit and a recurring payment is the amount of effort required to set-up a new one. Often times a customer will need to fill-in a form, that is then sent away to their bank to be processed. Recurring payments using the Open Banking Payments API can be started and completed in the same session, usually within minutes. Moreover, new recurring payments are not subject to the 10-day notice period that new direct debits must observe.

How is a recurring payment different to an automatic payment?

down arrow

An automatic payment ‘pushes’ the payment out of your account, but the amount is fixed, so any changes to this amount require effort from the customer to amend, authorise or cancel the payment. A recurring payment using the Open Banking Payment APIs is a ‘pull’ payment that is requested by the merchant. Once this is set-up, any changes in the amount do not require any additional customer effort, unless the customer sets a limit approval if a payment exceeds a specific amount.
